Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s)

Common warning signs include yellowing of the eyes or skin, swelling in the abdomen or legs, unusual tiredness, easy bruising or bleeding, confusion, and loss of appetite. If these symptoms worsen or persist, early evaluation by a liver specialist is important.

A liver transplant is advised when the liver is severely damaged and can no longer perform its normal functions. This decision is made after blood tests, scans, and a complete health assessment by the transplant team.

Yes, a liver transplant is a major surgery done under general anaesthesia and performed by a specialised transplant team. It requires careful preparation, close monitoring in the hospital, and structured follow-up after discharge.

Liver transplant is widely considered a safe and effective treatment for end-stage liver disease when done at an experienced centre with a trained transplant team. Like any major surgery, it has risks, so doctors recommend it only when the expected benefits are higher than the risks.

PSRI performs liver transplants using both living donors and deceased donors. In living donor transplants, a portion of the liver is transplanted and both the donor’s and recipient’s liver can regenerate over time.

Liver donors can be living or deceased. Living donors are generally between 18 and 65 years of age, in good physical and mental health, with a BMI below 33, and must be medically fit for surgery as confirmed by the transplant team.

The donor undergoes a step-by-step medical evaluation, including blood tests, imaging, and overall health checks. This process ensures that liver donation is safe for the donor and suitable for the recipient.

There is usually no single fixed age limit for recipients. Doctors decide eligibility based on overall health, other medical conditions, and whether the patient can safely undergo surgery and recovery.

Recovery varies for each patient, but it usually involves an initial ICU stay followed by gradual recovery with regular follow-ups. Doctors guide patients on diet, medicines, activity levels, and when it is safe to return to daily routines.

Yes, many people return to work and normal routines after recovery. Long-term success depends on regular follow-ups, taking medicines on time, and maintaining healthy daily habits.

PSRI treats advanced liver diseases, liver failure, biliary disorders, liver tumors, and liver cancers in both adults and children. The hospital provides comprehensive care, from diagnosis to surgery and long-term follow-up.
